Snap judgement
A quick verdict on the buzz
Ready to be spooked?
We already knew Mindhunter was going to be good when we saw it had been produced by David Fincher. But this is some really good stuff. The show, which stars Jonathan Groff as Holden Ford and Holt McCallany as Bill Tench, is about two FBI agents who decide to figure out why serial killers do what they do. Set in 1977, it shows the FBI grappling in the aftermath of killings by Charles Manson and David Berkowitz (also known as the Son of Sam). The writing is crisp and intellectually moving, and the atmosphere is gloomy and chilling. The direction is taut, and there is a seamless movement through the episodes.
A Maroon 5 fix
Maroon 5 seems to be trying something new, and we love it. Their new album, Red Pill Blues, has had us going from one song to another, nodding along in assent at the lyrics and the groovy music. We especially love Closure, which after two minutes of Adam Levine's lovely singing about how closure really doesn't exist, goes into an extended jam that is eerily similar to the beats of Ye Ishq Hai from Jab We Met. We are not kidding. Check it out for yourself.
Head to la la land
WE recently got hold of 11-year-old Tania Poonawalla's book on the Adventures of Harvey Mouse, a fantastical story of a young mouse and his friends, and what happens during the course of a fun sleepover party. Illustrated by her mother, Michelle, the book is a visual treat that impressed us with its simple, but endearing storyline. A special mention for the vibrant illustrations that have a Walt Disney-like feel to them. Even if you aren't into children's books, thumb through this one for a throwback to childhood.
