Two homegrown female hygiene brands are keeping the environment in mind while crafting products for ‘that time of the month’

Period cramps can be agonising, although some of us may get off easier than others. Incidentally, this affects close to 70 per cent of menstruating women in India and can cause troubled sleep, mood swings and fatigue. Nua has launched a self-heating patch designed to provide up to eight hours of heat. Cramp Comfort is made of natural ingredients, we are told. The comforter has been built on the principle of heat therapy that works by relaxing the muscles of the uterus and increasing blood flow to ease the pain. We tried it on a particularly taxing day. It certainly reduced the discomfort and we were able to haul ourselves out of bed. It doesn't get overtly hot, which gives the feeling of a warm hug. We like that the patches can be used as fertilisers for potted plants during disposal. A pack of three heat patches is available for Rs 299.

Granted, periods are inconvenient, but the disposal of soiled sanitary napkins can be more so. Most disposable sanitary napkins are not bio-degradable and lead to health and environmental hazards. Noraa, a young homegrown brand, has come up with what it claims are 100 per cent organic, and biodegradable sanitary napkins, liners and intimate wipes. The all-woman run production unit has been helping create employment opportunities. "The manufacturing process does not require adhesive or chemicals. The raw material is certified. As compared to other products which have 70-80 per cent PE (Polyethylene) in the back layer, we have it below 10 per cent," says co-founder Hemender Hoon.
