Get your Korean-drama fix

For those who are addicted to Korean dramas aka K-dramas, here’s a set of apps that will give you access to a lot more shows

SCK Drama

SC kdrama
SC kdrama is on the cutting edge of fresh stock from South Korea. You will have access to it within hours if not minutes after it airs. Not to mention they do have a huge collection of previously aired dramas. The subtitles also seem to be fan-made, which along with translations offer cultural insights so you can understand jokes and references. The downside is that this has NSFW (Not Safe For Work) ads. The ads are right on the edge of being pornographic. A huge disappointment for an app that works so well.

Kissasian

Kissasian sits in the grey area of K-drama streamers. There is no app for this, instead, you have to visit a website and play the content from there. The advantage is Kissasian is on the cutting edge of Korean content. It will always have the latest dramas and the subtitles, which are written by fans, are the best out of any services here. They also don't blur out parts of the series like Netflix. You will also have to have a pop-up blocker installed for your web browser, to prevent this site from launching any advert poppers. Kissasian is also very considerate of its users; you can turn off all ads on the page with a single click after 10 seconds.

Kdramas

Kdramas is another good app, with a huge collection. The dramas, included don't represent the entirety of what's available in South Korea. That said the selection it has represents some of the most popular series. The video playback is also a little slower than on the other apps and it takes a while to stabilise the stream. The upside is there is very little advertising and they are safe for work. The subtitles are not hardcoded with these. So if you are learning Korean, you can even turn off the English subs to practice.

Rakuten Viki

While Netflix has a lot of content, it very rarely has dramas that are currently on-going in South Korea. Rakuten Viki, on the other hand, has a huge collection of dramas and a fresh crop of series every season. The basic registration lets you watch the series, but there are ads and the video is of lower quality. If you are willing to pay for HD quality and no ads, you can go for the Vikipass which costs Rs 300 a month.

Netflix

Netflix is probably the driving force behind the current K-drama trend in India. They have a huge roster of series and even some exclusives. The downside is the subtitles aren't the best and the shows often blur out TV programming, food items and other things in the show. This can be a little annoying, especially when they are a key plot point for the series. You have to pay for your Netflix, which starts at just Rs 199 a month for the mobile plan.

AsiaFlix

AsiaFlix has a huge collection of K-Dramas and it streams pretty well. You can also lower the quality of the video in case you want to save your data. The app is done beautifully, but navigating out of a video seems a little hard to do. I had to force turn off the app several times because I couldn't get out of a video. The app also has a lot - and I mean a lot - of ads. Every time you do something, you are subjected to a five-second advertisement. So, while it is a good app to catch up with K-dramas it is not my number one go-to application.

GG Korean

GG Korean is a clone of SC K-drama in terms of content choice and looks of the app. While the collection is huge and gets updated regularly, some videos show the server is down. These eventually get fixed, but it is a recurring theme with this app. The great thing is the advertising is not in your face or NSFW, so you can watch it with people around. This again features fansubs which are superior to official subs in almost every way.
