The makers of Dunki dropped the first glimpse of the film on the occasion of Shah Rukh Khan Birthday 2023. It is titled Dunki Drop 1. The video introduced the characters and the basic plot of the Rajkumar Hirani directorial. While it was confirmed that Taapsee Pannu is paired with Shah Rukh in Dunki, the first glimpse video revealed Vicky Kaushal's character.

Vicky plays the role of Sukhi, who aspires to go to London and pursue his dreams. The actor came as a pleasant surprise to viewers. Amid a thundering response to Vicky's appearance in the Dunki Drop 1, here's revisiting his visit to the set of Shah Rukh's Asoka in Mumbai. His father Sham Kaushal had shared a picture of Vicky and his younger brother Sunny Kaushal with Shah Rukh.
Sharing the picture, the veteran stunt choreographer wrote, "By God’s grace this photo was taken in 2001 during the shooting of Asoka in Film City. Vishnu Vardhan was asstt director & Vicky was studying in 8th standards. No body ever imagined that one day Vicky will join film line & in 2022 both of them will be winning Best Director & Best Actor Awards respectively for Shershah & Sardar Udham. Almost a year after sharing the picture, the highly-anticipated Dunki Drop 1 premiered on YouTube. Sharing Dunki Drop 1 on Instagram, Shah Rukh wrote, "A story of simple and real people trying to fulfill their dreams and desires. Of friendship, love, and being together… Of being in a relationship called Home! A heartwarming story by a heartwarming storyteller. It’s an honour to be a part of this journey and I hope you all come along with us. The #DunkiDrop1 is here…"

Dunki is a Jio Studios, Red Chillies Entertainment and Rajkumar Hirani Films presentation. Rajkumar Hirani, Abhijaat Joshi and Kanika Dhillon have written the film. It is produced by Rajkumar and Gauri Khan. The film will release on Christmas 2023.
The film is based on the concept of Donkey Flight where Indian immigrants take a particular route to the United Kingdom. The term is based on a Punjabi idiom meaning to hop from place to place.
