Anushka Sharma turns 34. Her career is on the brink of turning 14. In the last 14 years, Anushka Sharma has mostly played characters that have battled conflicts that seem impossible to resolve, and something miraculous happens

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008)- Raj vs Suri

Suri and Raj, both are being essayed by the same man, but for Taani, they are two different people, both emotionally and physically. She’s ready to elope with Raj, completely forgetting about her husband. She reluctantly indulges in infidelity. Suri’s plans of becoming a drastically opposite personality to win the love of his wife backfires and how. And then, as the title suggests, God intervenes and she finally senses she should be with Suri, and something miraculous happens again. She finally comes to know they both were the same all along. Wish Vijay Anand was listening.

Band Baaja Baaraat (2010)- Pyaar vs Vyapaar

This was Sharma’s ticket to fame and fortune. She was a Delhi ki Kuddi who makes it clear never fall in love with someone you do business with. Bittu, Ranveer Singh in a sensational debut, readily agrees. The girl is the one who breaks the rules after a night of drinks and debauchery. All hell breaks loose. The boy pays the price for her sins. The couple reunites in the end ultimately, thanks to an emotional monologue by Bittu, the boss. Hope Pulkit Samrat is listening.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012)- Love vs Sex

A documentary filmmaker falls in love with a brooding soldier haunted by the demons of a passionate romance gone kaput. She makes it clear love is not for her. She has aspirations of having sex with different men with different accents. But in a film directed by Yash Chopra, love is bound to happen and it does. The girl is already heartbroken as she knows the Twain shall never meet. She remains single throughout, in the fond memories of the man she was truly in love with. This was Chopra’s swan song. Hope he’s listening.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016)- Pyaar vs Dosti

Pyaar Dosti Hai, this was Karan Johar’s declaration in 1998 when he made his directorial debut. Cut to 2016, a refusing to grow up man falls head over heels with his BFF Alizeh. She, of course, friend zones him even before he could know what that means. The relentless pursuits take him to her wedding, a different relationship, and ultimately musical success. The heart still yearns for her. After a point, she feels guilty of not being able to reciprocate the emotion. And then, passes away due to a terminal illness. The man is left alone, only with her memories. Johar said this is his favourite movie out of all the films he has directed. He too has experienced one sided love. Hope he’s listening.

Sanju (2018)- Truth vs Dutt

Throughout 2018, Rajkumar Hirani was called out for whitewashing Sanjay Dutt’s controversial and chaotic life by making a film that seemed too one sided in its stand. In between truth and Dutt stood the character of Anushka Sharma, who patiently listens to what the man went through from 1981 to 2013. She breaks into tears in between, twice over. Of course, she’s swayed by the power of his story. We all were. But how much was it was actually true? Hope Rajkumar Hirani is listening.
