Khan had revealed this interesting piece of trivia a year ago when she had appeared on The Kapil Sharma Show along with actress Raveena Tandon. The host, Kapil Sharma, asked the choreographer about the time she was called to choreograph the Colombian singer for a Bollywood-inspired performance of the 2006 song ‘Hips Don’t Lie’.
“I was called to New York because she wanted to perform the song in Bollywood style. So, I went there and I choreographed ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ for her," she revealed.
Shakira had performed the choreographed segment at the MTV Video Music Awards in the year 2006. She had worn a pink coloured traditional Indian outfit for the performance and had desi background dancers.
Back then, in an interview with BBC, Khan had said that Shakira learnt the choreography the day before the actual performance. "Shakira is one of the most fabulous dancers in the world now, and since the performance was highly talked about, there was tremendous pressure to do well," she said.
Khan added, "She came to New York the night before the final performance from her concert in Canada and rehearsed with me for four hours. After we left, she continued to practise for another hour at least."
Talking about the dance style, the choreographer had shared, "She wanted a lot of semiclassical routines with typical Indian steps, and we even did the famous Goddess Step with her standing in front, and all the dancers’ hands outstretched at the back."
Khan who has a National Film Award for Best Choreography to her credit began her journey with the 1992 film 'Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander'. She turned director with the film 'Main Hoon Na' in 2004. She also directed 'Om Shanti Om', and 'Happy New Year'. All her films starred Shah Rukh Khan in the lead.
