Kunal Kapoor, who is turning producer with a biopic, says the film industry needs change as budgets have gone ‘out of control’

It’s both a good and a bad time for Kunal Kapoor to foray into production. On the upside, the language of cinema is changing as OTT entertainment has made the audience more discerning. On the flipside, the budgets are getting more exorbitant, and their recovery, harder. The new producer, who is developing a biopic on Olympian Shiva Keshavan under his banner, views the current phase as a ‘time of change’. “[Earlier], many formulaic films were being made. Before the industry knew it, the audience had moved on from them. So, it’s a time of change in terms of the kind of stories the audience is interested in,” he reflects.
As a new producer, one aspect has come sharply in his focus—the soaring budgets, and how they are failing movies. “A lot of films have become too expensive to make,” he states. “You hear about all the extra costs that go into making a film, right from how much the actors are charging to the technicians and the entourage cost! It all has gone a little out of control. It’s definitely a time of change.”
