In a bid to normalise depiction of lovemaking on screen, Hiccups & Hookups makers release special video with focus on characters’ sex lives
Dutta and Babbar play siblings on the show
Lara Dutta and Prateik Babbar-led Hiccups & Hookups drops online today, signalling Lionsgate Play’s foray into the market of Indian originals. Along with the eight-episode series, the makers have decided to release a special video that will offer an unfiltered peek into the lead characters’ lives. When the first trailer was released, the series — an adaptation of the American show, Casual — was pitched as a dramedy about an oddball family. But in its final week, confident of their content, the team felt ready to up the sex talk and release a 90-second video that focuses on the intimate lives of Dutta’s recently-separated Vasudha, and her commitment-phobic brother Akhil, played by Babbar.

The team wanted the video to be true to the Kunal Kohli-helmed show that explores themes of love, sex, heartbreak, relationships and family. A source reveals, “After much discussion, it was felt that the audience should be prepared to accept the series for what it is. Showing lovemaking scenes in the trailer is important to normalise the depiction of sex on screen. Unlike Bollywood producers who pre-empt what the Indian audience is ready for, the makers understand the urban audiences’ sensibilities and have created content that speaks to them.”
