At the start of our chat, Pankaj Tripathi tells us that the promotional spree for OMG 2 has been “unusual” for him. “One can’t be sure how much to discuss the conversations around the film, and the ones actually in it,” he smiles. The actor is referring to the Central Board of Film Certification’s (CBFC) decision to hand the movie an ‘A’ certificate after a few modifications. The Akshay Kumar, Yami Gautam and Tripathi-starrer, which has religious themes, was apparently under intense scrutiny by the CBFC. In the Amit Rai-helmed social comedy, Tripathi plays a Lord Shiva devotee, who sues the school after his son is expelled for a ‘vulgar act’. The actor, in his typical mild manner, notes that he didn’t expect such furore around the movie, given its honest intention. “It is an important film that talks about sex education. I was surprised by the ‘A’ certificate. The film is about the issues of teenagers, and they won’t be able to watch it! OMG 2 has been given a 12+ certification in the UAE.”

He asserts that self-censorship is practiced at every stage of filmmaking, as artistes collaborate to create a movie that makes a larger point. “I [practice] self-censorship; most responsible actors do. While reading a script, I question every racy scene. I’ll come on board only if I am convinced that it isn’t put for sensational effect. Similarly, every writer and director does his due diligence. Amit Rai had quoted a line in the film. I called and asked him where the line was from. He promptly sent me the book where it [was referenced from]. OMG 2 pushes young people to think hard. We want the young generation to be better, don’t we?”
Proud as he is about being part of the project, Tripathi is equally ecstatic to star alongside Kumar, whom he considers his funniest co-star. “His stories and jokes are never-ending,” chuckles the actor. “The film’s narration was given to me by Akshay sir on a Zoom call. He remembers every beat of the story. Only Akshay sir will choose a subject like this. Other superstars will think it over before doing it. His desire [to highlight] social issues reflects in his films.”
