Tovino Thomas

Tovino Thomas: ‘Love switching from lead to supporting roles’ I Exclusive

Malayalam actor Tovino Thomas is all set to gear up for his 50th film release this Onam. The festive season will see him in not one but three distinct roles in the Malayalam film ARM (Ajayante Randam Moshanam). The film, he says was not his 50th shoot but took time for release due to immense post-production work. An ambitious period drama, ARM starts in the 17th century in Northern Kerala and takes us to the 1990s tracing the life of one family. Helmed by debutant Jithiin Laal, Tovino tells mid-day.com in an interview that the film is a dream carried by the director and writer Sujith Nambiar since 2016. He hopped on this dream boat in 2017.  Tovino on taking responsibility for his success and failure ARM is now ready to hit the theatres on September 12, 2024. Talking to us he reflected on his 50 film career which took him a little over a decade to achieve. An outsider in the industry, Tovino began his career with small roles until his work started getting noticed with films like 'Koothara', 'Godha', 'Guppy' among others. The actor who is among the prominent male lead actors in Malayalam cinema never shies away from being part of experimental films whether it is the stylish action film 'Thallumaala' or his superhero act with 'Minnal Murali', the actor has embraced all and every role he believes in. In the process, he has had his fair share of ups and downs. "I've done movies that made a mark. I've done movies that flopped. But I think it's all part of this career. I don't regret doing anything. Whatever I did, I take responsibility for it, for the success or failure.  I take the responsibility and move on. I try and improve myself. I know I have so much scope to improve and I'm ready to work for it,” he says.  Tovino has no qualms about playing a supporting role in films dominated by his contemporaries despite his star status.  “I always believe I'm living my dream. It was my dream to act in movies.  I started my career with very small characters.  I have done supporting roles, villain roles, and comic roles.  I started doing lead roles and  I still went back and did supporting roles and villain roles. I love switching from lead roles to supporting roles or villain roles." Tovino on his 50th release: ARM will mark Tovino's half-century in the movies. "This was not the 50th movie I shot. The movies which I shot after this got released, because we took so much time for the post production. My 50 movies include my guest appearances also.  So it's not that I've done 50 movies as a lead actor. But still, when you count it, 50 is a half-century. It's good to know that I've done these films and I'm living my dream.  And whatever I get, I consider it as a bonus. Because I already achieved my dream and now I'm living it.  I'm looking forward to the future. I don't have any plans, but I think  just because I don't have any plans, I have immense possibilities."

Anushka Ranjan: Want to create safe space where women can seek help

The Hema Committee report sent shockwaves in the country as it detailed the rampant discrimination and sexual exploitation of women in the Malayalam film industry. In the three weeks since the findings were made public, more women have come forward with sexual misconduct allegations, executive committee members of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) have resigned, and the industry’s dark side has been exposed. At a time when the #MeToo movement is resurfacing in India, actor Anushka Ranjan has teamed up with her producer-mother Anu Ranjan’s not-for-profit organisation, Beti, to set up a panel in Mumbai that will provide assistance to survivors of sexual violence. “In light of the growing challenges women face today, it’s crucial to expand our efforts towards women empowerment. The establishment of this expert panel is a step towards ensuring that women, who have suffered from sexual violence, receive the support they need—be it legal, psychological, or social. We want to create a safe space where they can speak up, seek help, and rebuild their lives with dignity,” says Anushka. The panel will include legal advisors, mental health professionals, and social workers. It won’t restrict its working to the film industry, instead offering help to survivors across the board. The actor says her firm belief that every woman should have the right to live without fear has sparked the decision. “We will collaborate with experts across various fields to offer support to those who have been silenced by fear and trauma. Every woman deserves to live free from the shadow of violence, and with this initiative, we aim to light the way towards a safer and more just society.”

Actor-filmmaker Arindam Sil

After #MeToo, Bengali filmmaker Arindam Sil accused of sexual harassment

Bengali filmmaker Arindam Sil was suspended by the Directors' Association of Eastern India (DAEI) following a complaint of sexual misconduct by an actress. Sil was the first big name in the Bengali film industry, also called Tollywood, against whom action was taken after allegations of sexual harassment shook the entertainment industries of the southern states. The suspension came into force with immediate effect, said a letter sent by DAEI late on Saturday. "Due to certain allegations made against you, and prima facie evidence we have with us, which are of deep concern and is maligning to the entire organisation, DAEI has decided to suspend you from membership for an indefinite period or till the allegations against you are cleared," said the letter sent by DAEI president Subrata Sen and secretary Sudeshna Roy. Arindam Sil: No one objected to my actions Sil, who is also a well-known actor, told reporters that what was being construed as misbehaviour was unintentional. He said the incident being referred to happened recently when he was explaining a scene to the actress during the shooting of a film. "No one objected to my actions or conduct at that time," he claimed. The DAEI took up the matter after the actress filed a complaint with the West Bengal Commission for Women. In a letter to the commission, which sought his reply on the allegation, Sil expressed his apology. Sil also told reporters that everyone who worked in the film and was present at the time of the incident would testify that his action was "unintentional". He said that before he could present his case to the DAEI, it suspended him. "I always explain scenes to my actors and actresses before taking a shot. After the particular incident, the actress concerned willingly took part in the shoot for four more hours," he said. 'Why one has to be physical to explain a shot?' The DAEI secretary said they took a considered view of the matter after talking to all sides and prima facie found merit in the complaint. The actress told NEWS18 Bangla that she had full faith in the commission. "Let me ask him why one has to be physical to explain a shot. We are all professional actors. The rest I will state before the commission whenever needed in the future," she said. Sil is known for his detective films such as 'Har Har Byomkesh' and 'Mitin Mashi', besides the Shabor series. Sil faced #MeToo allegations in 2020 Arindam had faced #METoo allegations too in 2020, when popular television actress Rupanjana Mitra had reportedly brought shocking allegations of sexual misconduct against him. In an interview with Anandabazar digital, the actress revealed how the filmmaker behaved inappropriately with her after calling her in his Kolkata office for the reading of the script for a popular daily soap, 'Bhumikanya'. Gurdas Maan

Gurdas Maan: 'I did not want Punjabi music to be stereotyped'

Marking his first cohesive music piece in seven years, Sound of Soil is veteran Punjabi artiste Gurdas Maan’s 46th album. Maan brings a gamut of sounds together in this nine-track offering, touching upon subjects ranging from the meaning of life, the essence of time, and desire. “The album has nine songs, like the navratna. A favourite on this list is a traditional Qawwali number that I first heard 40 years ago, and continued to play on several stages over the years. I wanted the young generation to have the opportunity to enjoy this song that has been dear to me,” says Maan, who was keen to present an album after having released a spate of singles in the past few years. Having trained his attention to preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of Punjab, the artiste, 67, continues to perform to packed audiences across the globe. But a discussion on the manner in which younger Punjabi artistes have commercialised the genre appears to evoke more joy than criticism. Acknowledging that the genre has broken cultural barriers, Maan credits artistes like Diljit Dosanjh, Karan Aujla, Ammy Virk, and Gippy Grewal for “adding their own flavour to Punjabi music” and appeasing a wider audience. “Several artistes in the UK and USA have also promoted the genre and created music that people can dance to. This is a wonderful thing.”  On his part, however, he turned down offers when his “conscience didn’t allow” him to pursue them. “During my time, songs that had double meanings were promoted. I was also offered record deals if I agreed to create them. However, I did not want Punjabi music to be stereotyped. I didn’t want people to say, ‘Punjabi gaane aise hi hote hain.’ I want people to remember that artistes like Baba Bulleh Shah, Amrita Pritam, and Shiv Kumar Batalvi also [wrote Punjabi poetry] that did not have dual meaning. Sure, several rappers write about addiction, and young [music listeners] are getting what they want from them. But I want to encourage young artistes to write with intention, and create [poetry] that warms people’s hearts, and educates and motivates our children. We want to be proud of the songs that our artistes create.” Citing that mental health illnesses like depression are prevalent among children, he points to an incident that reiterated his faith in his music. “I was told of a young man who was living in Australia, and was prepared to leave [the country] due to poor circumstances. Someone introduced him to my music, and he decided to rebuild his life after hearing it. He worked from the ground up to become the sous chef [of a restaurant]. When I met him four years later, he cried and told me the effect that my music had on him. Today, unfortunately, Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims are all talking about breaking [relationships]. No one is talking about bringing people together. The young generation needs to work with the mission of creating an impact and spreading [positive] messages. Money cannot be the only intention behind creating music. You need to have passion for your country and [the desire] to serve it.”
