Dhanteras, also known as Dhanatrayodashi, marks the beginning of the five-day hindu festival Diwali or Tihar in most of India and Nepal. It is celebrated on the thirteenth lunar day of the Krishna Paksha, of the hindu calendar month of Ashwina or Kartika. In 2025, it will be celebrated on Saturday, October 18.
The word is derived from two words: ‘Dhan’ meaning ‘wealth’ and ‘Teras’ meaning thirteen. It is believed that buying gold and silver on this day brings prosperity and good luck to one's family.
