A dead body of an unidentified woman in her late 30s was found stuffed inside a suitcase on the banks of Desai Creek near Palava area in Thane district in <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/maharashtra-stray-dogs-gr-state-mandates-immunisation-of-stray-dogs-local-civic-bodies-asked-to-set-up-helplines-23604694" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Maharashtra</a> on Monday, a police official said, reported the PTI.
According to the police, prima facie, the woman was beaten to death and the body was stuffed in a suitcase for disposal at the creek.
A case of murder has been registered and a probe into the matter has been launched by the police, Manpada police station senior inspector Sandipan Shinde said, according to the PTI.
"Efforts are underway to establish the identity of the woman. Missing person cases in Thane, Mumbai, Kalyan, Dombivli and CCTV footage from Palava and other areas are being checked," Shinde said, the news agency reported.
Meanwhile, in an another incident, a 20-year-old labourer was killed and another worker sustained grievous injuries when a heavy iron pipe fell on them at a bridge construction site in Thane city, police said on Monday, according to a PTI report.
The incident occurred near Gaimukh Chowpatty on the busy Ghodbunder Road on Saturday, and <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/pune-illegal-arms-case-gangs-sourced-weapons-from-madhya-pradesh-village-36-detained-say-police-23604540" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">police</a> have registered a case against the site contractor for allegedly failing to provide basic safety equipment to the labourers. The contractor has been charged with causing grievous hurt and negligence.
As per the FIR registered in connection with the tragedy, the incident took place when a group of workers was lifting a heavy iron pipe intended for an under-construction bridge, the PTI reported.
The iron pipe suddenly slipped and fell on two workers, resulting in the death of Sujit Kumar Harilal Prasad (20) on the spot. Another labourer, Abhishek Harind Prasad Bharti (22), sustained serious injuries, police stated, citing the news agency.
In his complaint, Diwakar Kumar Yogender Prasad (25), a labourer at the site, mentioned that he and five of his cousins were present when the accident occurred.
The contractor for the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-ahmedabad-bullet-train-project-updates-11th-steel-bridge-successfully-launched-in-ahmedabad-23604690" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">bridge</a> work, Rajesh Kumar Shankar Sah, failed to provide the workers with essential safety gear, police said, quoting from the complaint.
The iron pipes had not been properly secured, causing one of them to slip and fall directly on two workers, they added, according to the PTI.
Police have booked the contractor under sections 116(1) (grievous hurt), 125 (acts endangering the life or personal safety of others), and 125(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for negligence.
