An FIR has been registered against the secretary of a housing society in <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/mumbai-woman-threatens-to-file-false-rape-case-against-dadar-man-demands-rs-30-lakh-booked-23597833" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Mumbai</a> for allegedly making objectionable remarks against a resident's wife in an official group email, police said, reported news agency PTI.
A 41-year-old financial consultant, the complainant in the case, lives with his wife and other family members in the Thakur Village area of Kandivali.
The man, an active participant in his housing society matters, apparently had frequent disagreements with the secretary over administrative issues, an official from Samta Nagar police station said on Monday, reported PTI.
The secretary had tried to obstruct the man's involvement in society work, leading to repeated <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/thane-man-booked-for-power-theft-of-rs-4-19-lakh-after-power-companys-complaint-23598467" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">verbal altercations</a> between them.
On October 10, ahead of the managing committee meeting scheduled on October 17, the man sent an email listing a few discussion points to the society's official email ID. In response, the secretary sent a reply, addressed to all the committee members, with alleged defamatory remarks against the man's wife, the official said, reported PTI.
Based on the man's complaint, the police on Sunday registered a case against the secretary under Sections 79 (word, sound, gesture, or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman, including actions performed online) and 356(2) (defamation) of the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-thane-trader-booked-for-selling-firecrackers-without-licence-ahead-of-diwali-23598464" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita</a>, and provisions of the Information Technology Act, the official added.
<h2>Kolhapur man held for posing as woman, blackmailing MLA</h2>
Meanwhile, a 26-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly posing as a woman and blackmailing an MLA in Maharashtra's Thane city to extort money from him, police said on Monday, reported PTI.
The <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-eight-injured-as-drunk-bus-driver-rams-vehicle-into-metro-pillar-in-andheri-east-23598565" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Thane city police</a> on Sunday arrested the accused, Mohan Jyotiba Pawar, under section 308(3) (extortion) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and provisions of the Information Technology (IT) Act, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Wagle Estate) Prashant Kadam said, reported PTI.
The police had earlier registered a case against a woman, but after a probe, they zeroed in on Pawar and apprehended him from Kolhapur.
The official said the accused allegedly posed as a woman and sent the MLA several chat messages, including obscene and objectionable videos and photos, blackmailed him and demanded Rs 5-10 lakh.
A probe team examined technical inputs and call detail records (CDRs) of the mobile number used by the perpetrator, traced him to <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/maharashtra-one-arrested-and-13-others-booked-after-violent-clash-between-two-groups-in-latur-breaks-out-23598481" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Kolhapur</a>, he said, reported PTI.
To establish credibility and convince the MLA that he was interacting with a woman, the accused sent a photo of his sister's Aadhaar card to the legislator, the official added, reported PTI.
"There was only one person involved, and neither the accused's sister nor any other woman was part of the crime," he said, adding that Pawar got acquainted with <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/maharashtra-navi-mumbai-man-booked-for-objectionable-ai-video-on-cji-gavai-23597962" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">the MLA</a> during the latter's stay in his constituency in Kolhapur.
