Two suspects who had allegedly stolen cash and an ATM cash van nearly 12 years ago were arrested by the Kandivali police in Mumbai, the police said on Tuesday.

According to the police, the Kandivali police arrested both accused from Maharashtra after tracing them for the crime that took place around 12 years ago. The duo had fled with cash along with the ATM cash van containing around Rs 78 lakh in the year 2012.
The police said that the arrested accused have been identified as Arun Sahdev Waghmare and Satish Sambhaji Agle. The two were nabbed after officials from the Kandivali police traced them to different district of the state.

According to the police sources, the incident had taken place when the former colleagues of the suspects were busy loading some cash into an ATM at MG Road in 2012. The cash van was being driven by Arun Waghmare, his associate allegedly took advantage of the fact that he was the driver of the cash van and fled with the vehicle along with the money in the van. The two had allegedly then fled away after leaving the cash van at a deserted spot in Kandivali.
Sources further added that the cash van was later found abandoned at another location in Kandivali by the police team that was investigating the crime. Since the duo was absconding after the incident for nearly 12 years, the Kandivali police had been on the lookout since the time they had zeroed upon the culprits.
According to the police sources, the police recovered Rs 31 lakh from Waghmare's resident in the Kandiarpada area of Dahisar. On the day of the incident the accused had hiden the cash by wrapping plastics and had put the money inside the drum which was filled with water. He had later fled away with the rest of the amount.
The police sources said, after tracking down the accused for years, on May 17, the team of four officers including PSI Nitin Satam left for Sangli and arrested Waghmare from Veksenwadi Vishram Baug area. Later, the police also arrested Satish from his native village- Sai Aras, Khede in Latur district on May 21.

Along with the Kandivali police, the crime branch Unit 11 and Unit 12 were also in searching for the culprits the but the duo could not be found for all these years, sources added.
Waghmare was spending his life normally after the crime. He was working as a labourer in Sangli and was not in contact with any of his family members. On the other hand, Satish was also living a normal life and he was staying in his native village with his parents, the duo were in contact with each other.
The police said that it is yet to be established that where did the duo spend the money they had stolen for which further investugations are being done.
"The duo were finally traced in Sangli and Latur district respectively and were finally nabbed and placed under arrest for their crime. The two were produced before a court following their arrest for further legal process. Further investigations in the matter are underway," an official said.
The police sources said that Waghmare had planned the entire heist as he was an employee of the firm that takes contracts to load cash into ATMs. On the day of the heist, the five employees including Waghmare and Satish had left with the van from their office in Kamala Mills Compound, Lower Parel, at around 1 pm. The entourage included two armed security guards too. The vehicle reached an ATM outlet on SV Road in Kandivali (West) to deposit some cash at around 2.30 pm, three employees got off with Rs 44 lakh to deposit in the machine, while the fourth, a security guard, stayed back with Waghmare. A few minutes later, the guard too got off the vehicle to fetch water as he was feeling thirsty. Waghmare, who started working for the company only 10 days ago, cashed in on the opportunity and had fled with the vehicle, and Rs 78 lakh.
