Atleast eight people died and 60 were injured after a hoarding in Ghatkopar collapsed in Mumbai rains and winds on Monday, an official said, reported the PTI.


The Mumbai Police on Monday night registered a case against the owner of the advertising hoarding that collapsed on Monday.


A police official said, "The police have registered an FIR under sections 304, 338, 337, 34 of the IPC against owner Bhavesh Bhinde and others at Pantnagar police station. The Pantnagar police station is further investigating the case."


The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on Monday deployed a team for rescue and relief operations after a huge hoarding collapsed in Ghatkopar.

The NDRF said, "One team of NDRF officials was deployed at Ghatkopar for operations. A total number 67 people have been rescued so far."

The civic body said that 60 people have been injured in the incident who have been shifted to hospital for treatment. Three people were declared brought dead by the doctors.

An advertising hoarding along the roadside had collapsed on nearby houses and petrol pump thereby more than 100 people were likely to be trapped, the BMC said.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade declared the incident as a 'Level II' call at 1658 hrs and Level III at 1825 hrs.

A shed at a petrol pump in Ghatkopar suddenly collapsed after a huge hoarding fell on it amid dust storm and rains in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said on Monday.

The civic body said that a distressing incident took place at the Petrol Pump in Police Ground at the busy Eastern Express Highway in Ghatkopar East, as a shed collapsed. In the incident several people were trapped beneath the debris and their rescue operation was underway.

The officials said that a major mishap took place at the BPCL petrol pump, opposite Adani project in Pantnagar area of Ghatkopar.

Those injured are being treated by a team of doctors.

Preliminary investigations revealed that gusty winds and heavy rain on Monday May 13, that lashed many parts of the MMR region including Mumbai suburbs had led to a huge hoarding collapse and it fell on the roof of BPCL petrol pump, resulting in the mishap. Police and rescue operations are underway to pull out the injured and clear the debris.

The BMC said that after receiving the information, the civic officials and the Mumbai Fire Brigade rushed to the spot and promptly responded to the incident.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade, local police personnel, and 108 Ambulance services were deployed to aid in the search and rescue operation.
