Fire breaks out in meter room of Thane building, 50 residents evacuated

A fire broke out in the meter room of a residential building in Thane West area of Maharashtra on Wednesday civic officials said adding that around 50 residents were evacuated and no injuries were reported in the incidentThe incident took place at the B Wing of Shree Dharmaveer Society a groundplussevenstorey building located near the Uthalsar ward office of the Thane Municipal Corporation TMCThe residential building is located behind Jalaram TradersThe incident was reported to the Regional Disaster Management Cell RDMC control room at around 717 pmFire brought under control quicklyAfter receiving the alert fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot with one fire engine along with staff from the Disaster Management Cell using a utility vehicle Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company MSEDCL officials were also present at the site the RDMC saidThe fire was completely extinguished by around 740 pm and the situation was brought under controlResidents safely evacuated due to heavy smokeDue to heavy smoke spreading inside the building around 40 to 50 residents were safely evacuated as a precautionary measure Firefighters and disaster management staff helped residents move out of the building safelyOfficials confirmed that no one was injured in the incidentMeter boxes damaged power supply cutThe fire caused damage to 19 electricity meter boxes located inside the meter room As a safety measure the electricity supply to the building was disconnected by MSEDCL staffAuthorities said further checks will be carried out before restoring powerSituation fully under controlOfficials stated that the fire was limited to the meter room and did not spread to other parts of the building The cause of the fire is yet to be confirmedMumbai Fire Brigade inspects 2703 establishments cracks down on 136Meanwhile ahead of New Year 2026 celebrations the Mumbai Fire Brigade has inspected 2703 establishments under its lsquoSpecial Fire Safety Campaignrsquo and taken action against 136 establishments under the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act 2006In an intensified drive ahead of the New Year 2026 celebrations on Wednesday the fire brigade cracked down on establishments in Kamala Mills and Shakti Mills confiscating eight illegal commercial liquefied petroleum gas LPG cylinders 200 kg of coal 135 litres of cooking oil and other flammable materialsThe Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation BMC launched the special campaign earlier this month In a statement issued on Wednesday the civic body said ldquoOn the night of December 30 2025 during an operation conducted by the lsquoG Southrsquo Ward in the Kamala Mill and Shakti Mill areas of Lower Parel eight illegal commercial LPG cylinders 200 kg of coal 135 litres of cooking oil and other materials were seizedrdquoThe statement further noted that various programmes and celebrations are being organised at hotels pubs bars residential complexes buildings and beaches across Mumbai to welcome the New Year drawing large crowds ldquoThe BMC has appealed to all establishment owners and organisers to strictly adhere to fire safety guidelines during New Yearrelated celebrationsrdquo it said
