Three people have died and more than 120 were evacuated amid heavy rains in <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-weather-updates-imd-issues-yellow-alert-for-thunderstorms-and-heavy-rain-23594261" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Maharashtra</a> in the last 24 hours, the State Disaster Management Department said on Tuesday, reported news agency PTI.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other rescue teams were involved in evacuations in the affected districts, the department stated in a release on Maharashtra rains.
Heavy rains pounded five of eight districts in <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-imd-issues-yellow-alert-heavy-rain-storms-to-continue-23594218" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Marathwada</a> on Monday, with Beed receiving the highest 143.7 mm of rain, followed by Nanded with 131.6 mm and Jalna with 121.4 mm in 24 hours ending Tuesday morning, reported PTI.
Rivers ran in spate, and low-lying areas were flooded, disrupting normal life, with Beed and Ahilyanagar being the worst affected, according to the latest updates shared by the state government on the Maharashtra rains.
According to officials, rescue and relief operations were conducted in these areas, and more than 120 people were evacuated safely.
The NDRF has deployed 12 teams across the state to assist the local administration in evacuation and emergency relief. State agencies and district administrations have also mobilised fire brigades, police units and local volunteers, according to the latest updates shared by the state government on the Maharashtra rains, reported PTI.
As per the release, two people have died in rain-related incidents in Beed district, and one death was reported from <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-water-enters-homes-in-cheetah-camp-after-sunday-night-rains-23594217" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Nagpur</a>.
The authorities are monitoring dams, rivers and vulnerable villages, while warnings have been issued in parts of Marathwada and Vidarbha as the monsoon remains active.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a generally cloudy sky with moderate to heavy rainfall across <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-heavy-rain-sparks-fresh-fear-of-flooding-in-kranti-nagar-23594219" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Mumbai</a> and its suburbs on Tuesday. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are very likely during the day, the IMD said.
A yellow alert has been issued, warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms with lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30&ndash;40 kmph at isolated locations.
<a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-heavy-rain-floods-hindmata-gandhi-market-andheri-subway-again-23594220" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">High tide</a> is expected at 7:48 am with a height of 3.50 metres and again at 7:27 pm at 2.90 metres. Low tide will occur at 2:06 pm at 2.27 metres, while on September 17, the next low tide is expected at 2:00 am at 1.44 metres.
In the 24-hour period between 8 am on September 15 and 8 am on September 16, Mumbai city recorded 39.35 mm of rainfall, the eastern suburbs received 35.17 mm, and the western suburbs registered 40.34 mm, the IMD said in its latest Mumbai weather updates.
