Mumbai: Biker, auto driver identified in fatal Dahisar bridge accident

The victim was abandoned in in the Vasai Naigaon area

The Maharashtra Housing Board police have identified the biker involved in the accident that injured a 75-year-old woman on a bridge in Dahisar West last week, as well as the auto-rickshaw driver who abandoned her in the Vasai Naigaon area under the pretext of taking her to the hospital. Tragically, the woman later died due to lack of treatment.

The police have traced the biker and the auto driver, arresting the latter today in the Kandivli area. The auto driver was produced in court and remanded to police custody. The biker has not been arrested yet as he sustained serious injuries in the accident and is currently unconscious. Initially treated at Dr Baba Saheb Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali, his parents later moved him to a private hospital. According to a source from the MHB Police Station, he remains unconscious. The arrested auto driver has been identified as Rahulkumar Sukhdev Sahu, 27, a resident of Kandivli East.

According to an officer from MHB police station, during interrogation, Sahu told the police: “While I was passing by, I encountered a crowd gathered at the accident scene. The crowd forcibly put the injured woman into my auto-rickshaw, but no one accompanied us. They forced me to rush her to the hospital. I was very scared, fearing the hospital staff might accuse me of causing the accident and that the police would ask all kinds of questions. Out of fear, I left the woman and fled. I realise now that it was my mistake not to inform the police.”

The investigation began under the guidance of DCP Anand Bhoite Zone 11, ACP Sunil Jaybhaye, Senior Inspector Sudhir Kudal, and API Usha Khose. The team reviewed CCTV footage near the spot and traced the accused through their vehicle numbers. The biker, who resides in Michelwadi, Dahisar West, with his parents, had just graduated from college. On the day of the accident, feeling hungry and with his parents out, he went out in search of food and unintentionally hit the woman. “Since the biker is currently unconscious, we have summoned his parents. Once he recovers, he will be arrested,” the officer added.
