The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for the city on Saturday and Sunday, and an orange alert for the next three consecutive days after that.

Speaking with mid-day, an IMD official said, “The city is likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall between Saturday and Sunday, with isolated patches of extremely heavy rainfall. During these two days, rainfall in some parts of the city is likely to be around 200 mm. However, such areas are difficult to identify. Most of them are located in hilly areas such as Borivli and Navi Mumbai.”

The official said that rainfall has been consistently increasing over the last 24 hours, and it will be at “its peak over the weekend”.

When asked whether the crackling thunder that Mumbaikars experienced on Saturday morning would continue, the official said that since most of the thunder clouds are located over the Arabian Sea, chances of thunder accompanied by lightning were low. “People must not step out if and when there is heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder, especially now during the pandemic.”
