Mumbai: Fire breaks out at commercial building in Santacruz East

A fire broke out at a commercial building in the Kalina area of Santacruz East during the early hours of Sunday civic officials said The incident was reported to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporationrsquos Mumbai Fire Brigade MFB at around 237 amAccording to officials the fire occurred at Emgeen Chambers situated opposite Bharat Bank on CST Road The blaze was confined to a closed office on the sixth floor of the basementplusgroundplussixstorey glass facade commercial buildingThe fire affected electrical wiring and installations office files and records wooden furniture computers doors windows chairs glass facade elements and the false ceiling in an area measuring approximately 60 feet by 60 feetAfter receiving the alert multiple firefighting and emergency response units were mobilised including an Assistant Divisional Fire Officer senior station officers several fire engines and jumbo tankers an aerial water tower tender a hydraulic platform a quick response vehicle a breathing apparatus van and a 108 ambulance Personnel from the police the concerned electricity distribution company and BMC ward staff were also present at the siteFirefighters succeeded in bringing the blaze under control and fully extinguishing it by 414 am officials confirmedNo injuries were reported in the incident Authorities are continuing to assess the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage79 Mumbai establishments face BMC action over fire safety normsMeanwhile ahead of New Year celebrations the Mumbai Fire Brigade has initiated action against 79 establishments over violation of fire safety norms the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation BMC said on SaturdayAs part of a special fire safety campaign the fire brigade inspected 1221 establishments between December 22 and 26 the civic body said in a releaseNotices were issued to 20 establishments while action was taken against 59 others for various violations Action was also initiated against four establishments that were otherwise compliant but had stored one or two excess LPG cylinders it saidThe inspections were conducted at hotels restaurants pubs bars and other venues that witness large public gatherings during New Year festivitiesThe release said the special drive is scheduled to continue till December 28 and action against noncompliant eateries is being taken under the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures ActThe BMC further said inspections would continue even after the campaign as part of routine enforcement and appealed to establishment owners to strictly follow fire safety norms while urging citizens to remain vigilant during New Year celebrations
