As heavy rainfall battered Mumbai throughout the day, the chronic waterlogging spots of Hindmata in Dadar East and Gandhi Market area near Matunga faced flooding. Similarly, Andheri subway, a chronic waterlogging spot in the western suburbs, was also flooded.
The India Meteorological Department had issued a red alert for rain on Monday. To ease monsoon flooding, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had in 2021 completed the construction of underground water holding tanks at both these waterlogging spots. The tank at Hindmata has a capacity to store 30 lakh litres of water.
