Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds led to a dust storm-like situation in Mumbai on Monday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a warning for the district. The weather conditions resulted in reduced visibility in many areas and also caused some damage, including instances of trees falling and hoardings collapsing. Power supply disruptions were reported in Matunga, Dadar, and Prabhadevi.

The IMD also raised its yellow alert to orange for Thane and Satara, where heavy downpour was witnessed. Various areas of Thane district, including Kalyan, Ambernath, Diva, and Mumbra, experienced heavy showers, while the eastern suburbs of Mumbai saw light drizzles.

According to the weather forecast, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds (50-60 kmph), and hail are expected in isolated locations. In its evening bulletin, IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre, Mumbai, stated: “Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and moderate to intense spells of rain with gusty winds reaching 50-60 kmph very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Thane and Satara. Possibility of hail at isolated places. Take precautions while moving out.”

“Expect heavy to intense rainfall for the next two hours in Thane and Palghar, Kalyan, Badlapur, and interior areas. Residents are advised to stay indoors as wind speeds will be very high, reaching around 40-50 kmph. Intense rain is expected in interior regions,” posted Rushikesh Agre, an independent meteorologist.

Explaining the weather system and unseasonal rains, climatologist Rajesh Kapadia from private weather blog Vagaries of the Weather, said, “Thunder clouds developed and formed in the eastern townships like Kalyan, Badlapur and Navi Mumbai on Monday afternoon. In a sudden development, the thundery clouds drifted towards Mumbai, and due to the fierce intensity of the clouds, a strong ‘downdraft’ roared into the city and suburbs. The winds in gusts touched 60–70 kmph, like cyclonic winds.”
