Workers and leaders of the Mumbai Congress on Thursday staged a demonstration at Aarey Colony to protest against the Eknath Shinde government`s decision to relocate the Metro car shed project to the forested area in the city. The party`s city unit chief Bhai Jagtap, who led the protest, rubbished Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis` claim that the state government stands to lose Rs 5,000 crore if the car shed is taken out of Aarey and termed it as "baseless". Maharashtra reports 2,678 Covid-19 cases, eight deaths
Maharashtra on Thursday recorded 2,678 new coronavirus cases and eight pandemic-related deaths, the state health department said. The state also reported 20 new infections of BA.2.75 subvariant of Omicron, the official release said. On Wednesday, Maharashtra had reported 3,142 coronavirus cases and seven fatalities. The caseload in the state rose to 79,95,729, and death toll reached 1,47,964. (PTI)

Based on a tip-off by an animal welfare organisation, the police laid a trap at Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road in the morning and seized the banned meat, which was being loaded from one vehicle to another, the official from Deonar police station said. The decomposed body of a man was found in a swollen drain in Maharashtra`s Palghar district which has been witnessing heavy rains since the last few days, a official told PTI on Thursday. A police official told PTI that they suspect that the deceased, identified as Rahul Vishwakarma, might have slipped into the drain amid the heavy showers and got washed away.

Three people were injured in a landslide at Chunabhatti, Sion, caused by heavy rainfall on Wednesday. Many low-lying areas, including Hindmata and Gandhi Market, were flooded. A part of the hill at Nagoba Chowk in Chunabhatti came crashing on the nearby one-storey Narayan Hadke chawl. Three injured were sent to civic-run Sion hospital. The IMD has issued an alert for heavy rain in the city and surrounding districts for the next four days. Mumbai man arrested on charges of promoting enmity through his tweets &nbsp; Police have arrested a 25-year-old man from Mumbai`s suburb of Bandra over his tweets that were deemed offensive and intended to promote enmity between different groups, an official told PTI. The accused, Rizwan Toufique Rahman Shaikh, a resident of K C Marg in Bandra (West), was apprehended by the Unit -9 of the Mumbai crime branch on Tuesday night.
