A 24-year-old worker died of electrocution while working in an electronic wire manufacturing unit at Ambarnath MIDC in Maharashtra`s Thane district, police said on Friday. The incident occurred on June 14 and the police have registered a case of negligence against the owner of the company and its two personnel, they said. "Deceased Rahul Chowdhary was testing the wires at the plant when he suffered an electric shock and died on the spot. It was found that the company did not provide a PPE (personal protective equipment) to the worker that led to his death," a police official said, quoting the complaint lodged by his cousin. (PTI)

The civic body of Maharashtra`s Thane city has collected 32 per cent of its targeted taxes for the financial year 2023-24 in the first three months, the corporation said in a release on Friday. In the first quarter of the current financial year, the Thane Municipal Corporation collected Rs 253.86 crore in taxes as against Rs 185.86 crore for the same period in 2022-23, it said. Civic chief Abhijit Bangar attributed the higher collection to the 10 per cent rebate that they had offered in the payment of the full year`s taxes in advance. He said the rebate has now been extended till June 30. Another senior official said that the tax collection in 2022-23 stood at Rs 752 crore. This year, the target is Rs 800 crore, he said. (PTI)

The accused allegedly stole electricity for periods ranging from 5 months to 54 months and the total value of the theft was Rs 17.8 lakh, the official said. (PTI)

A mobile shop owner residing in Maharashtra`s Thane district, who lost Rs 36 lakh in a cryptocurrency fraud more than a year ago, has got his entire amount back after the police cracked the case and found that a Chinese national was involved in the offence, an official said on Friday. The probe into the case was conducted by the cyber cell of the Mira Bhayandar-Vasai Virar (MBVV) police commissionerate, he said. Sujitkumar Gunjkar, senior inspector of the MBVV cyber cell, said the victim was lured into cryptocurrency trading in February 2022 after he joined a WhatsApp group involving cryptocurrency traders. The group administrator, a woman, got in touch with him and sought investments in the cryptocurrency promising goods returns. (PTI)
