A 12-year-old boy reportedly died after getting trapped in a lift of a housing society in <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/maharashtra-pune-zilla-parishad-school-wins-global-community-choice-award-23596773" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Pune</a>, police said on Friday, reported the PTI.
The incident took place at around 5 pm on Thursday at Ram Smruti Cooperative Society in the Charholi Budruk area of the city, an official said.
According to fire officials, they received a call about a child being trapped inside a lift, following which a team was sent to the spot.
"The boy was found stuck between the third and fourth floors. His lower part was pressed between the lift car and the shaft wall," said a fire official, according to the PTI.
The fire personnel first broke open the lift control room door and disconnected the power supply to prevent any further movement. They then lowered the lift and extricated the child, he said.
The boy was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead during treatment, the official said, adding that they are trying to ascertain the exact sequence of events and the reasons behind the lift malfunction, the news agency reported.
In an another incident, last month, as many as four people were injured after a lift collapsed from the sixth floor of a building in <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/maharashtra-thane-deputy-civic-commissioner-held-in-rs-25-lakh-bribery-case-remanded-to-police-custody-23596896" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Maharashtra</a>'s Thane district, officials had earlier said.
The incident had occurred at the eight-storey building located at Ghandari locality in Kalyan town in September, they had said.
The lift malfunctioned and crashed suddenly from the sixth floor, according to local residents, reported PTI.
Four of the eight occupants of the lift were injured, and locals rushed them to the hospital. Two of the injured persons suffered leg fractures, the officials had earlier said.
A senior official of the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation's fire brigade said they were not informed about the incident and some locals rescued the lift occupants, reported PTI.
The fire brigade came to know about the incident through the media and visited the site, the official had said, reported PTI.
The police also said they were not informed about the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/maharashtra-gas-leak-near-hospital-in-thane-supply-affected-23596860" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">incident</a>.
The lift was functioning erratically for a few months, and the issue had been brought to the notice of the housing society management, but to no avail, locals had claimed.
