Ahmednagar becomes Ahilyanagar in a historic move by Indian Railways

The change was announced by the Central Railway’s Pune Division, following the Government of Maharashtra’s decision to rename the city of Ahmednagar itself to Ahilyanagar. The renaming is part of an effort to pay tribute to Ahilyabai Holkar’s contributions to public welfare and governance during her reign in the 18th century

Indian Railway on Tuesday has renamed  Maharashtra's Ahmednagar Railway station as Ahilyanagar to pay tribute to a historic figure, Ahilya Bai Holkar. 

The change was announced by the Central Railway’s Pune Division, following the Government of Maharashtra’s decision to rename the city of Ahmednagar itself to Ahilyanagar. The renaming is part of an effort to pay tribute to Ahilyabai Holkar’s contributions to public welfare and governance during her reign in the 18th century.
