<p>The Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) will not contest the upcoming Baramati by-elections scheduled in April, Supriya Sule said on Monday, reported the PTI.</p>
<p>Speaking in Delhi on Monday, Sule said that the NCP (SP) will not field a candidate against Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and NCP leader Sunetra Pawar in Baramati.</p>
<p>The <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/assembly-election-2026-ec-orders-appointment-of-new-chief-secy-in-poll-bound-west-bengal-23620991" target="_blank" rel="none noopener"><strong>Election Commission of India</strong></a> had on Sunday announced that by-elections will be held for the Baramati assembly seat in Pune and Rahuri in Ahilyanagar on April 23, following the deaths of then Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and BJP legislator Shivaji Kardile, respectively.</p>
<p>Regarding the Rahuri seat, Sule added that Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) partners will deliberate and finalise a decision in the coming days.</p>
<h2>BJP prepared if polls go to contest</h2>
<p>Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that all efforts would be made to hold the bypolls unopposed through consensus, but stressed that the BJP is ready to contest if necessary.</p>
<h2>Baramati and NCP leadership</h2>
<p>In the 2024 general elections, Supriya Sule, daughter of NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar, retained the Baramati Lok Sabha seat, defeating her cousin Sunetra Pawar in her maiden contest. Sunetra later became a Rajya Sabha member and was appointed Deputy Chief Minister following the plane crash on January 28 near Baramati that killed her husband <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/rohit-pawar-meets-rahul-gandhi-seeks-fair-probe-into-ajit-pawar-plane-crash-23620542" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener"><strong>Ajit Pawar</strong></a> and four others, according to the PTI.</p>
<h2>Calls for transparent probe and LPG action plan</h2>
<p>Sule urged for a transparent investigation into Ajit Pawar&rsquo;s plane crash. She also highlighted LPG supply concerns amid geopolitical tensions in West Asia, calling on the Centre to convene an all-party meeting and formulate a clear action plan.</p>
<p>&ldquo;The hotel and business sectors are facing difficulties due to geopolitical volatility,&rdquo; Sule said, stressing that Parliament should discuss the issue and address the ongoing LPG crisis.</p>
<h2>Polls in 4 states</h2>
<p>The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the election schedule for four states and one Union Territory (UT) on Sunday, while expounding the elaborate measures undertaken by the poll body for ensuring free, fair and transparent Assembly <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/rajya-sabha-polls-2026-elections-across-10-states-nda-oppn-face-off-in-bihar-haryana-odisha-23620992" target="_blank" rel="none noopener"><strong>elections</strong></a>.&nbsp;</p>
<p>"Assam and Kerala will vote in a single phase on April 9. The UT of Puducherry will go to the polls on April 9. In Tamil Nadu, all 234 seats will head to polls in a single phase on April 23," CEC Gyanesh Kumar said at a press conference, the IANS reported.</p>
<p>"For the 294-member West Bengal, the polling will be held in two phases. 152 seats will see elections on April 23, while the second phase will be held for the remaining 142 seats on April 29," he added.</p>
<p>The results of all the Assembly elections will be announced on May 4.</p>
<p>The CEC also announced by-elections for 8 constituencies, spread across Goa, Gujarat, <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/maharashtra-sanjay-raut-targets-eci-ahead-of-poll-schedule-announcement-for-tamil-nadu-assam-kerala-and-west-bengal-23620918" target="_blank" rel="none noopener"><strong>Maharashtra</strong></a>, Karnataka, and Tripura.</p>
<p>The by-elections in Gujarat and Maharashtra will be held on April 23, while the rest will be held on April 9.</p>
