Amidst an ongoing `language war` in Maharashtra, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis asserted on Thursday that language should never be a source of conflict and that a Marathi individual could never be narrow-minded on such matters, reported news agency PTI.
Addressing a function at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi, Chief Minister Fadnavis stated that his government’s policy advocates for Marathi alongside other Indian languages. This comes even as parts of Mumbai experienced violent protests against the perceived “imposition of Hindi” in Maharashtra.
"Language is a means of communication, but never of discord. Mother tongue is important. Every Marathi person is proud of the Marathi language. Insistence on Marathi is natural and justified, but we should also respect other Indian languages," he remarked.
