Two engineering students riding a motorbike were killed after a truck knocked them down in <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/man-tries-to-kill-person-by-hitting-him-with-car-in-pune-detained-23351536" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Maharashtra`s Pune city</a>, police said on Tuesday, reported news agency PTI.
Pune accident: Driver arrested
The driver of the truck, after hitting the motorbike on Monday night, did not stop and tried to run away but was caught some distance away and arrested, they said.
The incident took place at around 10.30 pm on Monday in Chandan Nagar area on <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/thane-man-loses-his-legs-after-falling-from-local-train-23351065" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Pune-Ahmednagar road</a> when three students, in their early 20s and studying at an engineering college here, were on way to the Pune railway station, the police said, reported PTI.
Two of them were to go to their hometown Latur in Maharashtra.
Pune accident: A youth died on the spot
"While they were on the way, the truck hit their motorbike from the backside. A youth died on the spot, while another succumbed to injuries in a hospital," <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/thane-truck-falls-from-bypass-road-killing-1-injuring-1-23351058" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Vimaltal police station`s</a> inspector Anand Khobre said, reported PTI.
"After the accident, the truck driver did not stop and tried to escape, but was stopped by police and locals about 300 metres away," the official said, reported PTI.
Pune accident: Driver booked
The <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/maharashtra-elderly-woman-loses-life-after-being-hit-by-a-tractor-in-gondia-23350568" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">truck driver</a> was arrested and booked under Indian Penal Code section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and other relevant sections, the police said, adding that an investigation was on into the case, reported PTI.
On May 19, a Porsche car allegedly driven by a 17-year-old boy knocked down a motorbike in Kalyani Nagar area here, killing two IT professionals.
Pune accident: Other incidents
Meanwhile, a labourer was killed and two other persons were injured when a dumper ran over them at the Samruddhi Expressway construction site in Maharashtra`s Thane district, police said on Tuesday, reported PTI.
The incident took place at around 11.30 pm on Sunday near the Washala bridge in Kasara area of the district, they said, reported PTI.
The labourers working at the construction site were sleeping on a roadside when the dumper which was passing by from there ran over them, an official from Kasara police station said, reported PTI.
The deceased has been identified as Ashok Jadhav (50). His 22-year-old son and a woman aged 60 were injured in the incident, the police said, reported PTI.
After being alerted, police reached the spot. They sent the body to a government hospital for postmortem and rushed the injured persons to a local hospital where they were undergoing treatment, the official said, reported PTI.
An FIR has been since registered against the dumper driver under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act, they said, adding that no arrest has been made so far.
