Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam MP K Kanimozhi, who has tested positive for COVID-19, on Tuesday cast her vote for the Tamil Nadu assembly elections while wearing a Personal protective equipment (PPE) kit. The DMK leader voted at a polling station in Mylapore.

After a day of turmoil, voting for the third phase of the tightly contested West Bengal assembly elections ended on Tuesday evening with a voter turnout of 77.68 per cent.
According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), some instances of violence and brawls were reported in a few areas and some arrests have been made.

Around 79 per cent of the total of 79,19,641 voters exercised their franchise till 5 p.m. in the third and final phase of the Assam Assembly polls, held in 40 constituencies amid tight security on Tuesday, according to election officials.

The third and final phase of the Assam election witnessed a voter turnout of 78.29 per cent till 5:20 pm on Tuesday, the Election Commission said.
South Salmara district registered the highest voter turnout with 88.59 per cent polling, while Kamrup Metro witnessed the lowest voter turnout with 60.34 per cent polling.
The Mankachar constituency recorded the highest voter turnout with 87.66 percent polling, while the Gauhati East recorded the lowest voter turnout with 55 per cent polling.

As many as 68.04 per cent cent of the voters turned out to exercise their franchise till 3 pm during the third phase of Assembly elections in West Bengal on Tuesday, according to official data received here.
78,564,74 voters in 31 Assembly constituencies spread across three districts -- South 24 Parganas, Hooghly and Howrah -- are out to cast their votes during the third phase on Tuesday.
According to Election Commission data, around 68.04 per cent polling was recorded in the first five hours of polling, much on the lines of Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the elections held on March 27 and April 1, respectively.

Tamil Nadu voter turnout at 54.10 per cent, Puducherry at 66.58 per cent till 4 pm

Assam Assembly Deputy Speaker Aminul Haque Laskar has been quizzed twice and five police personnel attached to him have been suspended after they opened fire on public during second phase of polling, officials said Tuesday, as per a PTI report. At least three persons were injured in the firing by the body guards of Laskar on April 1 after clashes broke out between supporters of BJP and AIUDF inside the polling station at 463 Madhya Dhanehori LP School of Sonai constituency.

Voter turnout till 11 am
Over 30 per cent voters exercised their franchise in West Bengal, Kerala and Assam till 11 am. Puducherry recorded 35-59 per cent voter turnout so far and Tamil Nadu recorded a turnout of 20.84 per cent.

Amid sporadic violence, brisk voting was recorded in 31 Assembly constituencies spread across three districts -- South 24 parganas, Hooghly and Howrah.
According to Election Commission data, 14.62 per cent polling was recorded in the first three hours of polling much on the lines of phase-1 and phase-2 polls held on March 27 and April 1 respectively.
There were reports of violence from Goghat in Hooghly where BJP alleged that a mother of a BJP worker was killed by the Trinamool goons last night. Similarly, Trinamool Congress alleged that people were not being allowed to vote in different booths of Sasta, Dagira, Babuldanga and Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas.
The Hooghly district, where 7 constituencies are going for the polls, recorded the highest percentage of 17.35 per cent followed by Howrah district where 15, 52 per cent poll was recorded in the 8 constituencies.
The 16 constituencies of South 24 Parganas recorded the lowest percentage of 12.81 in the first three hours of polling.

Brisk polling was witnessed across the 234-assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu. According to the Election Commission of India, 13.80 per cent of votes have been polled in the state till 9 am. At some polling booths, voting began a bit late owing to technical glitches.

Across Kerala, the response to polling was enthusiastic and after the first two hours of poll, 10 per cent of the electorate had cast their votes, said the State Election Commission officials.

WEST BENGAL
In the third phase, 78,52,425 electorates will vote for 31 Assembly constituencies spread across three districts of West Bengal. Among the constituencies, 16 are in South 24 Parganas, 18 in Hooghly and the rest of the seven are from Howrah rural areas.
There are 205 candidates in the fray in this round of polling, with Diamond Harbour having the maximum number of candidates at 11. However, when it comes to women representation, there are only 13 women candidates contesting in this phase, merely six per cent.
Among the most high-profile candidates, it is BJP`s Swapan Dasgupta contesting from the Tarakeswar constituency in Hooghly. Dasgupta, a noted journalist and a Padma Bhushan awardee, has been a Rajya Sabha member and resigned recently to contest the West Bengal Assembly polls.
In the Arambagh constituency, TMC has fielded Sujata Mondal Khan against CPI(M)`s Sakti Mohan Malik and BJP`s Madhusudhan Bag. The interesting fact is Sujata Mondal Khan is the wife of BJP MP Saumitra Khan.
Diamond Harbour is the parliamentary constituency of TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee, the nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Polling for the first two phases of the West Bengal elections were held on March 27 and April 1 respectively. The fourth phase of polling will take place on April 10.

ASSAM
Assam will witness triangular contests in 40 assembly constituencies in the last of the three phases to decide the fate of 337 candidates, including senior minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, his five cabinet colleagues and BJP state unit president Ranjeet Kumar Dass.
A direct contest between nominees of the BJP-led NDA and Congress-headed Grand Alliance is on the cards in 20 constituencies while there is a triangular fight, including friendly contests, in the remaining seats with the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) being considered as the third force.
The newly floated AJP is contesting in 22 seats while there are 126 independents in the fray.
There are 25 women candidates contesting in this phase. The fate of 20 sitting MLAs - eight from the Congress, five from the BJP, three each from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and the BPF and one from the AGP -- will be decided in the final phase.
The first two phases of the election were held on March 27 and April 1.

TAMIL NADU
In Tamil Nadu, about 6.26 crore electorates will vote for 234 Assembly seats. Apart from the Assembly elections, there will also be the bypoll for the Kanniyakumari Lok Sabha seat in the state.
There will be a six cornered contest for occupying Fort St. George though the main contest will be between the ruling AIADMK-led alliance and the DMK-led front.
The others in the fray are actor-turned-politicians Kamal Haasan`s Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) alliance, Vijayakant promoted DMDK, the alliance led by Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) floated by T.T.V.Dhinakaran and movie director Seeman`s Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK).
This election is a waveless poll with AIADMK-led by Chief Minister K. Palaniswami seeking a third term for the party, while the DMK-led by its president MK Stalin will be seeking to break the decade long power drought.
The ruling AIADMK is fighting the poll in 179 seats and six other small parties each contesting in one seat under the former`s Two Leaves symbol.
The others in the AIADMK alliance are the BJP (contesting in 20 seats) and PMK (23), TMC (6).
On the other hand, the DMK will be fighting in 173 seats while alliance parties Congress (25), CPI, CPI-M, MDMK and VCK in six seats each, IUML, KMDK (3 each), MMK (2), All India Forward Bloc, Makkal Viduthalai Katchi, Athi Thamizhar Peravai and Tamizhaga Vazhuvurimai Katchi each contesting in one seat.
A total of 187 candidates -- DMK`s own and that of alliance parties -- will be contesting under the former`s Rising Sun symbol.
The MNM is allied with actor Sarathkumar`s AISMK and IJK while Dhinakaran`s AMMK has allied with the DMDK, AIMIM and others.
The Seeman-led NTK is going it alone contesting in all the 234 constituencies.
The other parties in the fray on their own are the Bahujan Samaj Party (contesting in 160 seats), Puthiya Tamizhagam (60 seats) and Republican Party of India (16 seats).
Notable candidates in the polls and the constituencies are: Palaniswami, Deputy Chief Minister O.Panneerselvam (Bodinayakkanur), Stalin (Kolathur), his son Udhayanidhi Stalin (Chepauk-Tiruvallikeni), DMDK Treasurer and Vijayakant`s wife Premalatha (Vridhachalam) MNM founder Kamal Haasan (Coimbatore South), TN BJP President L. Murugan (Dharapuram), actor Khushbu Sundar (Thousand Lights), TN BJP Vice President K.Annamalai, PMK`s G.K.Mani (Pennagaram) and Seeman (Tiruvottriyur).
In the bypoll for the Kanniyakumari Lok Sabha seat, the fight is between former Union Minister and BJP`s Pon Radhakrishnan and Congress party`s Vijay Vasanth.

PUDUCHERRY
In the Union Territory having just over 10 lakh voters, the fight for the 30-member Assembly is majorly between the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) consisting of Congress, DMK, CPI, VCK and an Independent and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) comprising of All India N.R. Congress, BJP and AIADMK.

KERALA
In Kerala, 2.74 crore voters will exercise their franchise to decide the fate of 957 candidates, including high-profile leaders and independents in 140 Assembly constituencies.
The total electorate in the state includes 1,32,83,724 male voters, 1,41,62,025 female voters and 290 transgenders, according to Election Commission figures.
An array of ministers and several sitting MLAs from both the traditional coalitions - CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) and Congress-headed United Democratic Front (UDF) are seeking another term.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, health minister K K Shailaja, Devaswom Minister Kadakampally Surendran, Power Minister M M Mani and Higher Education Minister K K Jaleel are among the prominent personalities trying their electoral luck from the ruling side.
Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala, former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, senior leaders K Muraleedharan, P T Thomas and Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan are among those contesting from the UDF fold.
The election is crucial for an array of BJP leaders, including former Mizoram Governor Kummanam Rajasekharan, ``Metroman`` E Sreedharan, who joined the saffron party recently, state president K Surendran, senior leader Shobha Surendran, Rajya Sabha members Suresh Gopi and K J Alphons and others.

Polling began in the third phase of the assembly elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala and Assam at 7 am on Tuesday. While voters in Assam will cast their vote in three phases, polling in West Bengal will happen across eight phases. Counting of votes in all states will happen on May 2.
