The West Bengal cabinet on Wednesday approved a proposal to introduce a new Bill aimed at preventing rape and ensuring stricter punishments for such crimes. The Bill is scheduled to be presented in the assembly next week. Senior cabinet member and state Agriculture Minister Shobhandeb Chattopadhyay said he would request Speaker Biman Bandyopadhyay to convene a special two-day assembly session from September 2. "The proposed Bill will be tabled in the Assembly on September 3," Chattopadhyay said.

With the arrest of five persons, Navi Mumbai police on Wednesday claimed to have cracked a double murder case. Amir Anwar Khanjada (42) and Sumit Babulal Jain (39) left home in Nerul on August 21 for a property deal meeting but never returned, said additional commissioner of police (crime) Deepak Sakore. Their car was traced to Khopoli through GPS signal. Police found blood stains and two empty cartridges inside.

The NCP led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar will stage `silent` protests across Maharashtra on Thursday over the collapse of a statue of Shivaji Maharaj at a fort in Sindhudurg district. The party will demand the installation of a stronger and larger statue of the 17th Century king at the same spot, a functionary said. The move assumes significance given that the NCP is one of the three constituents in the Mahayuti government led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and considering the potential political ramifications amid huge outrage caused by the collapse of the statue. Earlier in the day, Ajit Pawar apologised to the people of Maharashtra for the collapse of the statue and assured action against guilty, whether officials or contractors.
