Vijayakanth battled health issues and was admitted to MIOT Hospital in November due to deteriorating health caused by coughing and throat pain. He tested positive for Covid-19 before his passing.

Known as `Captain`, he led a prolific career in the Tamil film industry, starring in 154 movies before entering politics.

Transitioning from cinema to politics, Vijayakanth served twice as a member of the Legislative Assembly, representing Virudhachalam and Rishivandiyam constituencies.
