<p>Congress leader Sonia Gandhi visited the CPI(M) headquarters to pay her last respects. Despite political differences, Gandhi had a close relationship with Yechury, dating back to 2004 when she chose Dr Manmohan Singh as prime minister.</p>

<p>Sitaram Yechury passed away on Thursday after battling a severe lung infection. He was 72 years old and had been admitted to AIIMS in Delhi on 19 August, where he remained in critical condition.</p>

<p>Yechury&rsquo;s body was taken to Jawaharlal Nehru University, where students and faculty members paid their respects. He was a prominent student leader at JNU, serving as the president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students` Union (JNUSU) three times.</p>
