Researchers at the University of Bath have discovered that deepfake videos, where a person’s face is digitally superimposed onto another’s body, can enhance learning experiences. In two separate experiments—one on fitness and the other on public speaking—participants performed better when watching a tutorial featuring a deepfake version of themselves as the instructor, compared to watching someone else. While deepfakes are notorious for spreading misinformation and malicious content, Christof Lutteroth and Christopher Clarke, co-authors of the study, see this as a positive application.
