India`s women’s team captain Harmanpreet Kaur wants to replicate what former India skippers Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni’s teams achieved by winning the World Cup in 1983 and 2011 respectively. The Mithali Raj-led Indian women’s team came very close to winning the title in 2017 in England. Despite Mumbai opener Punam Raut’s 86 and Harmanpreet’s 51, India fell nine runs short against Heather Knight-led England to lose the ODI World Cup final at Lord’s in July 2017. Now, Harmanpreet wants her teammates to break that final barrier and win their maiden World Cup to be played in India and Sri Lanka, starting September 30.
“Playing in front of our home crowd is always special, and this time I hope we will give our 100 per cent and try to break that final barrier that we have all been waiting for. [The confidence is] very high. The kind of cricket we’ve played over the last couple of years gives us a lot of confidence,” Harmanpreet said at an event to announce the 50-day countdown at a city hotel on Monday.
