Bolstered by half-centuries from left-handed opening batsman Arham Jain (51) and skipper Shahid Khan (53), Oxford Public School (Kandivli) totalled 218 all out in 78 overs against Modern English School (Chembur) on the first day of their three-day final of the MSSA inter-school Giles Shield boys’ under-14 cricket tournament at Wankhede Stadium on Friday.

Choosing to bat, Oxford got off to a solid start with 93 runs for the first wicket before Arham was bowled by Jasmit Singh in the 36th over.  Arham and Arhan Patel (48) took off from there. However, except for No. 4 batsman Shahid ,none of the other Oxford bastmen managed to stay long.

Modern English bowlers Jasmit (2 for 58) and left-arm spinner Vivaan Jobanputra (3 for 48) put the brakes on the opposition, picking wickets at regular intervals. Oxford Public captain Shahid was a bit disappointed with their batting performance. “We should have batted better, especially after openers Arham and Arhan provided a solid 90-odd first wicket partnership.

I tried to hold the innings together, but the other batters threw away their wickets. I believe we finished 30-40 runs short of putting up a challenging total. I now bank on the bowlers to do the job for us,” Shahid told mid-day. In reply, Modern English scored 14 for no loss from the three overs possible in the remaining 10 minutes of play before stumps.
