Asian Boxing qualifiers: Simranjit wins 1st bout

Simranjit's bout was a close one with both boxers exchanging blows continuously over the course of three rounds

Simranjit Kaur (60kg) and Sakshi Chaudhary (57kg) won their respective bouts on the second day of the Asian boxing Olympic qualifiers here on Wednesday. Nineteen-year-old Sakshi pulled off an upset over fourth seed and Asian Championship silver medallist Nilawan Techasuep of Thailand, while Simranjit beat Kazakhstan's Rimma Volossenko later in the day.

Simranjit now needs to win two more bouts to seal qualification, while Sakshi is one win away from booking her place in the Indian Olympic contingent. Former World Championship bronze medallist Simranjit faces second seed Namuun Monkhor of Mongolia in the quarterfinal while Sakshi will be lock horns with former youth world champion I.M. Aeji of Korea. Both bouts are scheduled for March 9.
