Mumbai Universities settle for bronze in inter-varsity squash

The Mumbai University men’s and women’s teams gave a good account of themselves, winning bronze medals at the AIU National Inter-University squash tournament held at the Somaiya Vidyavihar University in Mumbai recently.


In the men’s third-place match, Mumbai University beat Lovely Professional University 3-1 while the women’s bronze-medal encounter saw the Mumbai girls get the better of University of Kerala 3-1.

Hosts Somaiya Vidyavihar University beat MJP Rohilkhand University 3-1 to emerge men’s champions while the women’s category was won by University of Madras, who beat Shiv Nadar University Delhi NCR 3-1.

In the men’s final, Somaiya Vidyavihar University’s Suraj Chand beat MJP Rohilkhand University’s Aryan Singh (11-7, 14-12,11-5) after which Avinash Yadav beat Sajid Khan (11-5, 11-8,11-9). Somaiya Vidyavihar’s Rahul Baitha then went down to Saurabh Kumar (5-11, 7-11, 8-11) following which Om Semwal got the better of Udhay Bharti (11-5, 11-8, 11-2) to secure the title.

In the women’s summit clash, Madras University’s Harshitha beat Shiv Nadar Universty’s Ruchika (11-2, 11-1, 11-3) to make it 1-0. Rathika then doubled Madras University’s lead, beating University of Kerala’s Khushi 11-1, 11-0, 11-5 before Shiv Nadar Universty pulled one back when Sunita beat Krithica (11-7, 11-2, 11-2). Pooja however, won the final rubber for Madras University, beating Anjali in a tough four-setter 11-7, 11-2, 11-9, 14-12.
