Survey finds Indian brides and grooms assertive in their choice of life partner

A few years ago, the Indian bride was the shy wallflower and the groom the domineering one. But not any more.

Indian men and women are now looking to be equal partners in marriage. That's what a survey conducted by marriage portal Shaadi.com has found.

A heartening revelation of the survey was that 46.72 per cent of men want their brides to be working professionals instead of housewives.

They also don't want dowry. And 41.64 per cent of women would not prefer to live in a joint family after marriage.

"There are several disputes in joint families. Relationships are better maintained if some distance is maintained," said Prerna Sharma (27), a corporate communications manager, one of the 12,000 people who participated in the survey.

Pardesh Chalein: Survey reveals that 49.06 per cent of women want to shift abroad after marriage.

However, 54 per cent of men were in favour of staying in a joint family.

49.06 per cent of women also want to shift abroad after marriage. Nisha S, a cabin crew member with a private airline, said, "In the industry I work in, there are better growth opportunities overseas.

Therefore, I am open to the idea of finding a groom who lives abroad or someone in India who is willing to move abroad with me and settle there."

Changing Trends

These trends are expected, said Gourav Rakshit, global business head of Shaadi.com.

"They reflect a different mindset of the groom men who are looking for trust and faith instead of dowry. Brides have also asserted their choices instead of when parents dominated," he added.
