After 24 years, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has formed a new municipal ward, P East, which will be the 25th in the city. Its office will operate temporarily until a new building is built for it, from the Kundanlal Sehgal Natyagruha at Malad. In 2012 the BMC had announced the division of 3 wards for smooth administration. After a long wait, it divided the P North ward which covers Malad East, the West part of Goregaon and Kandivli, and carved out the new P East ward. It was inaugurated on Wednesday. This new ward will cover Malad East and Kurar. It has a 7 lakh population and 9 electoral wards.
A total of 17 different department facilities are provided in the ward office. These include the services of the Disaster Control Room, Solid Waste Management, Health, Water supply, and Maintenance. "Now citizens from Malad and Kurar East can also get birth and death certificates, marriage certificates in the new ward," said Kiran Dighavkar, assistant municipal commissioner of P North ward who will handle the P East ward.
The Guardian Minister of Mumbai Suburbs Mangalprabhat Lodha has directed BMC to start a full capacity office in a new building as soon as possible. MPs Gajanan Kirtikar, Gopal Shetty, former mayor Sunil Prabhu, and former ministers Aslam Shaikh and Atul Bhatkhalkar were present at the inauguration.
