A major fire swept a textile processing company based in Saravali MIDC on Kalyan-Bhiwandi Road, resulting in the death of an employee and serious injuries to another.
According to eyewitness accounts, the fire was caused after an oil pipe of a new machine exploded at 9 am in the five-storey building housing the textile dyeing company Mumbai Crimpers Private Limited.
According to the police, one Machindra Pardeshi, employee of the company died in the fire, while three others Deepak Kumar, Munna Tiwari and Nityanand were admitted to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital with serious burn injuries.
The fire was brought under control by 1.30 pm and as many as 70 fire engines from Ulhasnagar, Ambernath, Kalyan, Bhiwandi, Thane and the MIDC were put to the task.
However, it is not yet clear as to how many employees could have died as the company employs around few hundred in various shifts and the fire started just after a shift change at 8 am.
Some employees jumped from the building to save their lives and suffered injuries in the process. According to locals, companies in the region do not adhere to safety norms while administration does not act upon them.
