Demanding a code of conduct for journalists, special public prosecutor in 26/11 terror case, Ujjwal Nikam, has asked the media to observe restraint while reporting court proceedings.
"Running a newspaper may be a business proposition, but journalism is like a dharma which must be followed in true spirit," Nikam said at a function organised by the Mumbai Marathi Patrakar Sangh on Monday night.
"By giving sensational headlines one can sell the news but its impact on the society would not help in espousing the cause of journalism," he said after felicitating senior journalist Vasant Shinde.
Nikam lamented that there is a tendency among media persons to pick up observations of the court made in lighter vein which have no bearing on the case.
"Sometimes judges may indulge in emotional outburst or may make comments in lighter vein, but media should not publish these as it would send wrong signals to the society about the judiciary," he said.
Nikam refused to comments on Pakistani gunman Mohammed Ajmal Amir Qasab since the matter was subjudice. He however, said, "Mein Qasab ka hisab zaroor karoonga (I will definitely make Qasab accountable)."
