As the country fights the COVID-19 pandemic, Mumbai, on Wednesday received the first consignment of Covishield Vaccine, which arrived in Mumbai from Pune around 5.30 am. The BMC received a total of 1,39,500 doses of the vaccine from Serum Institute of India (SII), Pune.

The COVID-19 vaccines made by the Serum Institute of India will be delivered across Mumbai at designated vaccination centers for the national inoculation drive, which is set to begin on January 16. The first consignment of the Covishield vaccine was received by Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar and officials of the civic body.
As the vaccines arrived in the city, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope, on Wednesday, said that the 'Covishield' vaccine will not be administered to people under 18 years of age, pregnant women and those with allergies in Maharashtra, as per the Centre's protocols.
Since Tuesday night, the Coivshield vaccine doses have been dispatched all over Maharashtra, including the main depots in Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Kolhapur, Nashik, Akola, Nagpur and other places for onward distribution to the 511 designated vaccination centres.
Mumbai, which has been worst-hit in the country by the global pandemic with 11,200 deaths so far, the country's commercial capital has got 72 vaccination centres in the state.
