In an industry that is wary of the January jinx, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmaavat has broken the jinx by crossing the Rs 200-crore mark within 11 days of its release. The Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor-starrer minted Rs 46 crore over the second weekend, to raise its total collection to Rs 212.5 crore. Bhansali, who had earned the wrath of several fringe groups with his choice of subject for the film, is elated that the audience has stood by his side.

"Despite all the issues, people have come in large numbers to watch the film, which is a big victory. It's good to know that the audience wants to see my work and it instills confidence in me to make more films." Trade experts are relieved that the year has kicked off on a strong note, especially after the industry suffering huge losses in 2017.

Trade analyst Amod Mehra says, "It's a good start to 2018, considering last year wasn't great for the industry. Padmaavat will be one of the biggest Bollywood releases this year. With Aiyaary getting postponed by a week, this film will get an advantage of more screens and is likely to do a lifetime business of around Rs 275 crore."

Distributor-exhibitor Akshaye Rathi argues that the release of Akshay Kumar's Pad Man won't affect the period drama's run. "Despite Pad Man's release, this film will continue doing well." Mehra adds that the box-office numbers would have been more impressive, had the film released in Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. "The collection has been affected by 15 to 20 per cent. Had it got an unhindered release, it would have easily crossed Rs 300 crore."
