The year 2013 tolerated quite a lot of awkward yet amusing onscreen pairings in Hindi films
What’s common to Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh? They both share amazing onscreen chemistry with Deepika Padukone. And that winning factor helped the films they were paired in, this year. The same, however, can’t be said about a lot of couples on the big screen. Most of them were glaringly unsuccessful. While 2013 had ample examples of disastrous pairings, HitList picks on a few of them...

Ranbir Kapoor and Pallavi Sharda
Film: Besharam
Lowdown: Maybe it was the script that didn’t let the romantic lead prosper or maybe it just didn’t work out between the two. Whatever be the reason, the onscreen couple didn’t click the way Ranbir did with another newbie, Ileana D’Cruz, in Barfi last year. Happens.
Ajay Devgn and Tamannaah
Film: Himmatwala
Lowdown: The age difference between an actor and actress doesn’t matter as long as the two manage to pull it off (à la Salman Khan and Sonakshi Sinha in Dabangg perhaps). In all probability, these two left a rather unsavoury memory of an ambitious remake.
Ram Charan and Priyanka Chopra
Film: Zanjeer
Lowdown: Dud is the word for this onscreen couple. The magic just didn’t take off the way it was promoted via double entendres-filled songs Interestingly, the two looked great where they weren’t with each other in the film. Strange.
Sunny Deol and Urvashi Rautela
Film: Singh Saab the Great
Lowdown: Somebody needs to inform our relatively senior actors that pairing with relatively junior actresses doesn’t always work. For instance, Sunny paaji looked far from his usual, especially in frames involving him and Urvashi. Not happening only!u00a0
Sanjay Dutt and Prachi Desai
Film: Policegiri
Lowdown: Whoever did the casting of this film needs to check his/her eyesight. Isn’t it obvious that Sanjay Dutt and Prachi Desai don’t compliment each other by any possible romantic liberties? The avuncular feel they created was absolutely cringeworthy.u00a0
Shahid Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha
Film: R…Rajkumar
Lowdown: He looked younger than his age and she, older than hers. A pure hopscotch of a pairing. The spark was missing from the beginning till the end. Only some catchy dialogues exchanged between the two in the film came close to saving the grace.
Arshad Warsi and Riya Sen
Film: Rabba Main Kya Karoon
Lowdown: Arshad and Riya Sen’s pairing was as forgettable as the film itself.u00a0
Arjun Kapoor and Sasha Agha
Film: Aurangzeb
Lowdown: From what we saw of Arjun and Parineeti Chopra in Ishaqzaade, rugged charm appeared like the former’s X-factor. Not in this particular film, sorry. Despite their youth, he and Sasha looked lost in some other universe while sharing the screen.
Irrfan Khan and Soha Ali Khan
Film: Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster Returns
Lowdown: Going by his admirable filmography so far, it’d be safe to assert that Irrfan looks exceptionally great only with Tabu -- be it in Namesake, Maqbool or Life of Pi. This year, the acclaimed actor was paired with Soha and their onscreen match was dull.
Maternal discord
While we’re at it, let us point out that The Lunchbox -- despite being a love story that didn’t show the couple meet even once -- had a weird casting in the mother’s role. Lillete Dubey simply didn’t fit in as Nimrat Kaur’s distressed ma. u00a0
