Anurag Kashyap's ambitious project 'Bombay Velvet' has failed to create ripples at the domestic box office, grossing around Rs 16 crore in its opening weekend.

The day one collections were far from impressive — Rs 5.20 crore — and though it was expected that the numbers would improve over the weekend, the crowd at most city theatres showed preference for 'Piku' starring Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan and Irrfan.

'Bombay Velvet' has received middling to mixed reviews and the word-of-mouth buzz is not encouraging either, which are attributed to its poor performance at the ticket windows.

Trade analyst Amod Mehra says, “The opening of 'Bombay Velvet' sent shock waves to the film industry. It turned out to be lowest opening of this decade. It was obvious that neither the promos nor the music was exciting enough to lure the audience to the theatres. The only silver lining was that Piku continued to do well in its second weekend. Bombay Velvet's first weekend collection was less than what was predicted to be the first day figures.”

He adds that since the Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma-starrer has not recovered even one-fourth of the money spent on it, the producers stand to lose heavily. “ It was shocking that on Friday morning itself several shows were cancelled due to lack of audience,” he adds.

On the other hand, 'Piku' is going strong in its second week, even surpassing its first weekend collections. “'Bombay Velvet' has hardly any effect on this father-daughter drama despite running on lesser screens. So far, it has raked in Rs 56.02 crore and set a record for the highest second week collection of 2015,” says a trade source.
