If last week Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu was all that could go well with a romantic movie, Ekk Deewana Tha is all that could go wrong in the same genre. (By the way, can someone care to explain this newfound fascination with Ekk?)

Sachin (Prateik) is a 22-year-old wannabe filmmaker who promptly falls in love with Jessie (Amy Jackson), his landlord's daughter as soon as he spots her. And soon enough he has confessed his love to her. But she's not the one to melt too soon. So Sachin trails her wherever she goes like an amateur stalker. And at a weak moment, she even allows him to give her an apology of a kiss. But before he could even spell French Kiss, she has changed her mind and then changed her mind all over again. While Jessie is blowing hot and cold (no pun intended), leaving him all frustrated, all he does is make elaborate plans on how to further stalk her.

He is supposedly an assistant to the director, but we generally see him hanging around waiting to chase Jessie. Jessie is hell bent on fobbing him, as she foresees grave tragedies befalling them, since they follow different religions and she is a year older than him.u00a0 And if this was not enough, even while Jessie is yo-yoing between wanting Sachin and not wanting him, the respective set of parents get into fights and generally manage to piss each other off.

No, the story is not really as bad as it seems. With better direction and perhaps a little more sensitivity and with a faster pace, and better actors (oops, are they too many conditions?), it might have worked. But if I may quote the famous Murphy, all that could go wrong with this film, did. Acting (by both Prateik and Amy) is strictly below average, direction is meandering, editing is disjointed in most parts and yes it is too boringly long. Sigh. Even Rahman's music doesn't really lift this film out of the yawn-ing rut. The good thing is that Amy Jackson looks pretty and so does Kerala. But that as we know is never enough. Some of the other actors, especially Manu Rishi who plays Sachin's mentor are good.

I am told the Hindi and Telugu versions have a happy ending, while the Tamil one has a different, not so happy one. We watched the happy-it-ended one.
