Fashion special: Look your stylish best at upcoming music festivals

In the year 2010, at the Glastonbury Festival held in England, Emma Watson wasn’t performing on stage. Yet, all eyes were on the young Hollywood actress as she arrived as a spectator wearing a khaki-print corset, denim shorts and boots. If she can create an impression, so can you.

Every music festival sets a certain mood with the kind of songs played at its concerts. And it’s a great idea to dress and accessorise keeping this in mind. Here’s a lowdown on four different looks —including hair and make-up —that you can explore at four upcoming music festivals in the country:

Johnnie Walker — The Journey, Mumbai
This festival, which brings together artistes from the fields of music, film and performing arts, is back with its second edition and is scheduled to take place in Mumbai on December 13 at Mehboob Studios. The line-up this year includes artistes such as Simon Greene of Bonobo (Live), Snarky Puppy, Paul Potts and theatre group Dislocate.

Look: The festival, open to people 25 years old and above, commands a simple and classy look. Designer Nikhil Thampi, who is known for his chic designs and has designed for celebrities such as Sonam Kapoor and Anushka Sharma, advises, “Team a calf-length skirt with a crop top. Slip in a clutch and a neckpiece and finish the look with flats.” A dress with a summer blazer is also a great option, says designer Karishma Shahni Khan of label Ka-Sha. “Accessorise it with bohemian earrings or a neckpiece, and strap on a pair of sandals,” she adds

Hair: A classy affair such as this requires a chic hairstyle too. Hairstylist and make-up artiste Nitasha Wahi suggests going for a sleek and straight look. “However, you may try a side parting to add volume to your tresses,” she adds.

Make-up: Go bold with your make-up to create an impression. Wahi advises using a bold-berry coloured lipstick, with a hint of golden eye shadow and black eyeliner. If you are not feeling too adventurous, apply a berry-coloured lip stain. Using your finger, dab it on the centre of your lips and blend it in an outward motion.

Sunburn Festival, Goa
When you think Electronic Dance Music (EDM), you get a sunburn! That’s because Sunburn Festival is where all the action is, as you meander through the beaches of Goa and soak in the sun and the music. In its eighth season now, the festival will take place on Vagator Beach, Goa from December 27-29.

Look: When you have the beach as the backdrop, you have the freedom to have fun with your attire. “It’s a great idea to team a colourful bikini top with shorts and wear a sheer top or a deep neck dress over it,” opines designer Karishma Shahni Khan, adding that sunglasses are an absolute must with the outfit. “If throwing on a bikini makes you uncomfortable, you can also wear a tank top over your shorts and put on a summer jacket, bright-coloured flip flops/shoes and accessorise with hats and bangles,” says designer Rixi Bhatia, Founder of Quirk Box.

Hair: According to Mark Hampton, Toni&Guy Hair Meet Wardrobe Global Hair Ambassador, a messy look works best in the humid weather along the sea. Nail this look by flipping your hair, tying a high messy ponytail and loosen random bits in the front, at the sides and back.

Make-up: Rule: Don’t apply too much make-up on the beach. “Go very minimal on the make-up and opt for a matte foundation, if necessary. Have fun by using neon stick-ons on the side of your eyes or over your eyebrows for an urban tribal look,” says Nisha Singh, make-up artist at Fat Mu Academy.

Magnetic Fields, Alsisar Palace, Rajasthan
Picture this: A 17th century palace, workshops involving local artisans, Rajasthani food and the best of music from Germany, UK, India, Netherlands and France. This magical musical carnival will take place this year between December 12 and 15 and is a one-stop destination for music lovers. Few music festivals, after all, can boast of having such a soothing and soulful ambiance amid electrifying performances.

Look: A festival like this gives you the option to experiment with your look. “For an experimental look, wear a dhoti with a T-shirt and put on a jacket if it gets too cold. A hat would add to the look,” says designer Nikhil Thampi. Rixi Bhatia advises teaming a flowy maxi with a statement neckpiece and a sling bag. “It’s casual and elegant at the same time. Complete the look with a pair of flat sandals,” she adds.

Hair: “A low casual bun if you are going casual or a high bun if it suits your face will compliment the chunky jewellery,” says Nitasha Wahi.

Make-up: As with the attire, your make-up too, can be played around with. “Wear pink blush to give your skin a flushed look, with a hint of coral lips. Finally, enhance this simple look by adding a hint of metallic liner in the inner corner of your eyes and lots of mascara,” adds Wahi.

Enchanted Valley, Aamby Valley City
The three-day festival pays tribute to various forms of electronic dance music such as House, Techno, Trance, D&B (Drum and Bass), Pop, Fusion, Folk and Rock. What’s more, you get to camp in a valley surrounded by mountains on all three days. This year, the mountains beckon you from December 19 to 21.

When out camping, wear comfortable loose pants with minimal accessories, such as a scarf and a bracelet. model: Shreeradhe Outfit and Accessories: Vero Moda and only PICS/SHADAB KHAN

Look: This being a campout festival, comfort is the key factor, while deciding the look. “A pair of distressed denims teamed up with crop top and sneakers are ideal for a mountainous setting,” suggests Karishma Shahni Khan. “A relaxed wide trouser look with flats, a scarf and minimal accessories also work very well,” says designer Prathoni Yengkhom of the Poco and Jacky label.

Hair: Hampton suggests that a feminine, yet relaxed look, is best for a festival such as this. Take some flowers and weave them along with your braids. Choose flowers that complement your natural features and your outfit.

Make-up: “Opt for a fusion look to look different for this festival. You could put a bindi and highlight your eyes with a thick liner,” opines Singh.
