The gown culture finally seems to be setting in in India and not only on the ramp. And for once, we don't see models and celebrities walking the ramp in gowns that come with ostentatious frills and thrills.

These understated, yet sophisticated flowy gowns look straight out of the red carpet at Oscars. Says fashion designer Surily Goel, "Women today want to look softer and feminine, which is why gowns are making a slash in India, and I think they are here to stay."
And the traditional black is out of the ramp. "Women are being drawn to colours that are vibrant and happy. Pinks are hot this season," says Surily.
But when we talk about gowns, we're not referring to the figure-hugging ones that make you look like a victim of asphyxiation. Tight is not right anymore. Explains Surily, "While these gowns are well-fitting, they are neither overly loose or body-hugging. Women these days are opting for relaxed clothing."
Fashion designer Krishna Mehta however begs to differ. She feels that though most designers have been showcasing gowns in the various fashion weeks, the dress is only restricted to the ramp. "We try to translate western trends into our designs, which is why you are seeing models sashaying the ramp in gowns. However, I think there's still some time before we go the gown way," she signs off.u00a0u00a0
