Graceful goodbye: B-Town couples who parted ways without drama

In Bollywood, only a handful of relationships have stood the test of time. While bitter endings are not uncommon, there a few couples who have decided to call it quits quite amicably. Like Ranvir Shorey and Konkona Sensharma, who got married five years ago and have a son aged four.

Rumours about their troubled relationship had done the rounds a couple of years ago, but they seemed to have reconciled in between. In fact, they came together for the promotions of their last film, Gour Hari Dastaan. Ranvir had apparently recommended Koko’s name to the makers of the film and they decided to cast her. However, yesterday, the two actors took to social media to announce their separation and wrote identical posts. Ranvir wrote, “Konkona and I have mutually decided to separate, but continue to be friends and co-parent our son. Will appreciate your support. Thank you (sic)” while Konkona posted the same thing replacing her name with Ranvir’s.

In light of this bittersweet split, hitlist takes a look at other B-Town couples who parted ways on an amicable note...

Hrithik Roshan and Sussanne Khan

Married for: 14 years
Lowdown: When the actor married his childhood sweetheart in 2000, he broke a million hearts. And when the couple decided to call it quits last year, it wasn’t any less heartbreaking. Hrithik had issued a statement that read: “This is my greatest tribute to love. Sussanne is and always will be the love of my life for the rest of my life. If her smiles are brighter without me, my love for her must accomplish that.” Sussanne, on the other hand, said: “We are two individuals who respect and care for each other and have made our own individual choices. We are parents to two wonderful kids and our responsibility remains to protect and take care of them. Nothing can change that.” The couple shares joint custody of their two sons, Hrehaan and Hridhaan.

Aamir Khan and Reena Dutt

Married for: 16 years
Lowdown: The two got married in 1986 and have two children, Junaid and Ira. Reena was involved briefly in the star’s career when she worked as a producer for Lagaan (2011). The very next year, Aamir filed for divorce, ending the 16-year marriage over ‘temperamental differences’. Reena took custody of the two children. However, despite their legal separation and his second marriage to filmmaker Kiran Rao, they both continue to be cordial. In fact, Reena is part of most family gatherings at the actor’s Bandra home. And Aamir has also gone on record and praised Reena’s parenting skills.

Kalki Koechlin and Anurag Kashyap

Married for: Two years
Lowdown: Love blossomed between the filmmaker and the actress on the sets of Dev D (2009) and they decided to move in together. Two years later, they tied the knot, but within a few months, reports emerged about trouble in their paradise. The couple took time off from each other, but eventually filed for a mutual divorce in October last year. Initially, Huma Qureshi was blamed for their differences, but Kalki put the rumours to rest by tweeting, “Jesus Christ can we please leave Huma alone?! My problems with Anurag have nothing to do with her! (sic).” Their divorce came through in May this year. While Kalki has said that she won’t mind working with him again, Anurag was once quoted saying, “The biggest loss in my life has been that of Kalki.”

Pooja Bhatt and Munish Makhija

Married for: 11 years
Lowdown: The actress-turned-filmmaker met her ex husband on the sets of her 2003 film Paap and got married soon after. In December last year, Pooja chose to announce her split with Makhija, an anchor, actor and assistant director, on social media and wrote, “To all those who care and especially those that don’t, my husband Munna and me have decided to part ways after 11 glorious years of marriage. Our split as some might call it is amicable and we hold each other in the highest esteem for now and forever. The reason I explain is because we are both part of the public domain. Our friends, well-wishers and foes are free to now speculate. I choose to live life on my terms and refuse to perform to the gallery. Certificates don’t make or break marriages and relationships! Life does! (sic).” Two months ago, the former couple were spotted with a bunch of pals at a restaurant at the Bandra Kurla Complex. In spite of going their separate ways, they continue to share warm vibes.
